| Do you want a business card that will bring you business and present your company in the best possible light? Have you ever wondered if you should make business cards yourself? Whether or not you should include a logo?
Is using your photo a good idea? Where do all those phone numbers go?
It's downright confusing to design a business card. You know you need one — prospects expect someone who's serious about their business to have a business card. But how do you create a distinctive, memorable business card without spending too much time, too much money, or going crazy in the process? | | Open your mind to the possibility that maybe - just maybe - a business card can be more than just a tiny scrap of paper with your contact information. That may be how the "average" businessperson uses it, but you're ABOVE average. Your goal is to stand out. To be remembered. (And to create a tool that brings in new customers and more profit. Right?)
Your first decision (and it's the most critical) is to determine how you intend to use your business cards. That decision makes a profound difference on the style, content, and quantity.
Who will receive your card? For example, if your card is a marketing tool, often given to strangers, you need to add more wording about your product benefits. Someone who is already "sold" on your product is probably more interested in expanded contact information.
What do you want the recipient to do with the card? With only seven square inches of design space, it's smart to include only the information that leads to your preferred response. Odds are that your card will not generate sales directly, so your goal might be to get people to your website for more information. If so, emphasize the website address.
Under what conditions will they use it? If your ideal prospect has a basement full of water and will be looking for your card in the middle of the night, your card should be easy to read and easy to find. A magnetic card might be a good choice.
What are your industry conventions and prospect expectations? Your card should be memorable but not so outlandish that you lose credibility. For example, an attorney should probably avoid creating a colorful card with balloons on it. However, if your industry convention is navy blue text on white card stock, why not try maroon text?
If EVERYONE in your industry puts their photo on their card, why not put a photo of your product? Better yet, why not create a card whose design illustrates the BENEFIT of buying your product or service (better health, more money, sex appeal, and so on)?
This can be a tricky process, but the point is that there are ways to make even generic, company-designed, or otherwise "boring" conventional cards stand out. |
